That's Not Supposed to Happen (2013)
01 Jul 2013 • Animation, Short • 0h 4m
The title of this short appears to be ironic, because although the film is about things being controlled by forces outside of our hands, it is not the forces that says this line but rather the character to whom things happen on the whim of those pulling the strings (or rather, pushing the buttons). In this way there is a profundity and perhaps depressive acceptance of the idea that none of us can influence our lives significantly – so if we are in the wrong time or place then we will die; if we are born into poverty in a third world country then probably we will not be able to find ourselves in the position of someone born into a wealthy family in a leafy London suburb; you can decide if you have coffee or not tomorrow morning, but really how much does that matter. With the idea then, I did find myself drawn towards the film but unfortunately for all the profundity that it may have had, it delivers it in such a chaotic and visually messy fashion that I found it hard to go with the substance it suggested. Technically the animation is good as it flows through movement between events, and also has invention in the aliens and their world; but aesthetically it didn't do much for me and I found it to be a bit too crude for my tastes. As a short film it offers interest but I don't think it was focused enough in delivering it, even if I did like the nihilistic sense of pointlessness and loneliness which is its core.
