Home Diary (1938)

There are lots of bumps and creaks in the family lives of college friends Ken Uehara and Shin Saburi. One marries a bar maid, and his father disapproves. The other has married a lady with modern taste. The wives get along warily, but there's also an old girlfriend of Saburi, whom he is trying to help set up a beauty salon. There's misunderstanding, and lies, and a grandson to fight over, and despairThe ending appears to have been softened from the novel written by Nobuko Yoshiya; if the Japanese movie audiences and producers were not as addicted to happy endings as their American equivalents, they did like the implication of redemption. It may not be a great movie, but it all hangs together all right.
