Odds & Ends (1959)

This 4 minute short film is from "American Film Treasures/Avant Garde Film: Disc 1"--a compilation of mostly forgotten art films of the 20th century. This DVD set is NOT for the casual viewer and sometimes I wonder why I watched the films--as some of them were VERY artsy and weird! Jane Conger Benson Shimane made this very unusual film. It consists of various clips of folks (mostly looking like outtakes) inter-cut with various collages of color. During the course of this unusual film, a guy is talking about art, jazz and beat culture--and I am sure some thought this was great stuff. I just thought the guy talking was totally boring and full of crap (very pretentious, that's for sure). As for me, the overall film just seemed really, really strange and must have worked best in coffee houses and the like. All this combined with discordant music, it's a difficult film to enjoy. Interesting, perhaps, but not one that most folks would rush to see!
