Les misères de l'aiguille (1914)
18 Jan 1914 • Short • 0h 13m
It's a bit difficult to be certain what is going on in this movie. The central story of a young woman driven to suicide by the cares of earning piecework money to support her child and herself is confused by a lack of titles, some bad decomposition of the print posted to Youtube and random shots of people walking around. That's how they struck me while watching, but on thinking about it, they seem to be wearing nice clothes made by the underpaid seamstress, profiting from the misery of her needle. It's not clear, though. This movie, directed for the short-lived "Films for People" by a one-time director uses some old-time techniques that make me think this is a movie version of a magic-lantern show, like BUY YOUR OWN CHERRIES. Its survival would likely be a matter of having been used for union organizing and perhaps an early appearance by Musidora, best known for her work in Feuillade serials like LES VAMPIRES.
