Ted Eshbaugh was a talented cartoon director who made perhaps half a dozen excellent cartoons for various studios. He turns out a fine little wartime propaganda cartoon ballyhooing the air force. As is typical for these cartoons, there are, by modern standards, some outrageous stereotypes -- the Japanese are portrayed as monkeys -- highly insulting to them, as in their propaganda cartoons during the 1930s, the monkeys are Chinese -- and their dreaded Mitsubishi Zeros are bloated, haywire contraptions that fall to pieces.The best sequence, for my taste, is the middle one. After Cap'n Cub demands production, we see planes being produced and outfitted to a lovely little Latin number. Notice should also be taken of the excellence, almost oil-like background produced by Henri O. Courtais.In the end, however, Eshbaugh's makeshift team produces a good but not tremendous cartoon. Worth seeing if you can find it, but if you stick with the Private Snafu stuff, you'll be fine.
