I'm just guessing on this. But I'm guessing this tale is told in a traditional Japanese style. Like the timeless classic Rashomon, the story is given in pieces; as related by the players from their various points of view. Good fighting, Realm of the Senses sexiness, plot twists, disguises, betrayals. Better than most of the stuff shown on Tubi, the free streaming site. The foreign films actually show some quality. This made a nice Sunday afternoon's watch.
