The rise of right wing fundamentalism in India has paved the way for cow vigilantism in many parts of the country and has built the reputation of often escalating into violence. One such state that has seen a rise in cow vigilantism is Gujarat. Gau Premi, set on the outskirts of the Gujarati city of Rajkot, follows a group of cow vigilantes as they prowl the highway looking for a truck that is supposedly smuggling cows for slaughter, and attempts to get an inside look at their methods of functioning and understand what drives them. The documentary looks to shed more light on the intricacies of the problem and spark a much needed conversation.
