Wu fung chao yang (1971)
Action
Eight swordsmen stand on a big rock and take an oath. After the opening credits a group of women are leaving their butt prints on that big rock. Yes, butt prints. The five ladies then go to town and fight some men by using - you guessed it - their butts.I like this movie already at only 5 minutes in.Cut to the house of an official. His wife and daughter he hasn't seen in a year return. He has to leave to arrest a gang. They surrender but Yi Yuan arrives. It is difficult to discern from the subtitles exactly what the drama is because the translation is poor and the words are sometimes white on white. Yi Yuan is always the villain though and true to that he ends up killing our official. The ladies from the Butt Gang try to stop him but their butts are not his match.I am not making this up. They fight him with their butts. My copy is a digital file that plays as a fake wide screen on a HDTV. The fake wide screen is rectangular in shape but cropped on all sides. The dual Chinese and English embedded subtitles are also cropped. It was recorded from a television broadcast.Essie Lin Chia started her career at Shaw Brothers. She seemed to peak in 1970's "Swordswomen Three". About 1971 she took her act to Taiwan and disappeared after a hand full of films. All the other main women in this movie are Taiwanese.Because the subtitles are cut off, poorly translated, and often white on white, it is difficult to discern the details of this movie. It is an absurd comedy for one thing and a mix of other genres too. I cannot do a proper review because of that. I have looked for a better copy but none seems to exist.I can say this for sure. This is a martial arts comedy with a lot of nonsense happening. Hong Kong movies are known for this (despite this being Taiwanese.) This type of movie is an acquired taste so if you have no experience with this you are better off starting with something more recent. I'll rate it average just to be fair.
