The Shooting of Dan McGrew (1965)
Animation, Short • 0h 7m
With the collapse of Warner Brothers' animation department, the talent scattered. Eventually, most of them found their way to Depatie-Freleng, where Friz Freleng's credit work for THE PINK PANTHER kept them working for twenty years. Before that happened, though, some of them landed temporarily at other places. One of them was working for Ed Graham Jr, who came from nowhere, produced and directed three cartoons, and then vanished again. On them was this one and while in terms of cartooning, it isn't much -- limited animation and the drawings are not cleaned up -- clearly it was an attempt to make a virtue of necessity. However, this one is worth seeing, or listening to, because this old favorite of a poem is narrated by Walter Brennan and he does a great job of it -- the sort of weary, seen-it-all voice that he had had down pat since we was winning Oscars for playing eighty-year-old men thirty years earlier.
