Sylfiden (1903)
Documentary, Short • 0h 1m
This film features Ellen Price - a famous ballerina in the early years of the twentieth century apparently - performing the opening solo from La Sylphide in 1903. The film was shot by Peter Elfelt, the court photographer for the Danish royal family, and judging by the cramped area in which the ballerina dances it looks as if her performance was filmed in Elfelt's studio. No doubt Price was a fantastic ballerina but dancing around in a confined space on a silent film it is surprising how graceless she appears. In fact, with a grin seemingly permanently fixed on her face she appears almost comical. No doubt such a comment will infuriate ballet aficionados but sadly thats the way it is.
