Pioneering Danish filmmaker Peter Elfelt shot this short film in his cramped studio, and as others have noted the confines within which the unknown dancer here is asked to perform leaves the film fatally flawed. The lack of any music (on Europa Film Treasures, the website on which I viewed it) also diminishes the value of the film as a social document.Elfelt was court photographer for the Danish royal family and was practically the only filmmaker in Denmark in the early years of the cinema. Like so many pioneers, he used the camera simply as a tool for recording motion rather than as a means of expression. There are definitely better films to watch out there...
