Thick and Thin (1928)
07 May 1928 • Short, Comedy • 0h 22m
In the late 1920s, Laurel & Hardy became big Hollywood stars...not only in the States but around the world. They were so popular that when sound films came out, the pair made many films in multiple languages as they hadn't yet learned to dub films. So, in some cases there are German, Italian and Spanish language films starring the pair.In Germany, the team was known as 'Dick und Doof' which translates to Thick and Thin. Because of this, I can't help but assume that the Weiss Brothers studio was trying to cash in on their name by creating a film actually called 'Thick and Thin' and paired a skinny comic (Snub Pollard" with a fat one, Marvin Loback. And, in some ways the film plays a lot like one of the Laurel & Hardy silent shorts...just with different actors. In a plot you can find in several Laurel & Hardy films, Thick and Thin are behind on the rent and their landlady is furious...telling them she won't let them leave her apartment building until they pay! Well, they do get out and all sorts of silliness ensues--including a chance meeting with a guy smuggling booze, getting hit by a car driven by a rich young lady and more. There isn't really a lot of plot in this one. It seems more like a series of gags very tangentially related...and as such it is enjoyable. Nothing brilliant but fun.
