Subarashiki kinkô (1941)
25 Jun 1941 • Comedy, Drama • 1h 25m
Kingorô Yanagiya gets married against his will. Eventually they have two sons in their poverty-riddled wanderings, and she dies. A rich couple foster the younger boy, while Yanagiya and the other....Oh, it's a story of random incident, riddled with some nice comic setpieces. Every time someone sings a romantic song, it ends with some one tumbling into the water. Brothers praise each other, and fight over who is humbler. Director Torajirô Saitô shows a fine sense of comic timing, half Preston Sturges, half Jules White, and at the end, you leave the film knowing less than you did going in, but you laughed a lot along the way.
