Jack Bannion drowns while fishing in the small town's lake before the sheriff arrives, who came solely on account of his wife's reputed presentiment. Even retired, the ex-sheriff cant help bothering with dangers to the small community, either objective or according to Claire. Irrepentent drunk speed-devil Bobby Mills is 'dealt with' gruesomely.
