Neptune's Naughty Daughter (1917)
01 Nov 1917 • Short, Comedy
Alice Howell is the oppressed daughter of the house -- when asked why she can't be more like her prayerful little sister, Alice kicks her -- and the boys and girls on the beach won't let her play with them. However, when she sneaks out one evening, all the sailors like her. Her parents throw her out, and the problem becomes the sailors like her too much. After Henry 'Pathe' Lehrman lost control of L-KO to the Stern Brothers, they split the unit in half. For a year or so, they released their Century Comedies through the States Rights market rather than through brother-in-law Carl Laemmle's Universal Picture. This is odd, because Uncle Carl was a firm believer in nepotism; perhaps the banks or his remaining partners were still wielding some authority. Whatever the case is, this is an excellent short comedy, with some very funny gags and a gradual build-up to a dynamite final gag. Although the print used in THE ALICE HOWELL COLLECTION is worn, there's little that's lost.
