Yami utsu shinzô (2005)
02 Oct 2005 • Drama • 1h 44m
Yamiutsu Shinzo (2005) is an interesting genre-bender, including "making of" scenes, actor commentary, and footage from the original recycled as flashbacks. However, it abandons the original's punk energy and moral ambiguity along with its Super 8 production. Indeed, the most interesting aspect of the new film is the involvement of the original cast, openly wrestling with the moral implications of their 1982 performance, who try to convince the producers to change the story so the villains get their comeuppance. Yamiutsu Shinzo (1982) was a disturbing movie, and viewers may be tempted to shirk its intensity. The 2005 remake will neither shock nor offend; it offers only middle aged reminiscence about an outlaw past, with judgment, guilt...and nostalgia.
