"Sous la Griffe" is a film from Jean Durand. As usual for his films, his wife, Berthe Dagmar, plays one of the leading roles.The film begins in Southern Rhodesia (which is odd, as you never see a black person in the film). A man brings a letter to Mr. Warest indicating he is desperately needed at his property many miles away. During this trip, Warest discovers some gold and soon dies of the fever. Two of his scum-bag employees find his letter to Mrs. Warest (Dagmar) in which he talks of finding gold--and expecting much more. Instead of giving it to her, they decide to try to convince her to sell out and move away--though she is NOT anxious to sell. So, they decide to try to kill her with a leopard!! In the end, a decent man finds out what is happening and goes to the rescue.The biggest reason to see the film is to watch Dagmar actually wrestling with a leopard! Sure, it is a young one and apparently a rather tame one, but Durand sure was willing to try some crazy stuff in his films to excite the audiences--such as escaped lions and an out of control train that runs through a small French town!! He certainly was not about subtlety but looked to capture his audience's attention! Well worth seeing.By the way, as you read the letters in the film written by three different people, notice how the handwriting (whether male or female) is exactly the same!
