Lucien Nonguet went to work for Pathe Freres as an assistant for Ferdinand Zecca and is credited as co-director of Zecca's LIFE OF Jesus. On his own he directed a series of current-event films about the Russo-Japanese War and the troubles in Russia. This movie is one of the last series and purports to show the assassination of the Russian minister in charge of the secret police. Although the historical facts are a little difficult to unravel at this distance in light of the fragmentation of the leftist movements in Russia and the mythology imposed by the Communists, there seems little doubt that Plehve stirred up hatred by playing on anti-Semitism and Jewish involvement in Communist and even anarchist movement. His assassination was very popular among the left, but only incited more repressive movements.Visually this is a barebones reconstruction in one shot. Still, the suddenness with which the destruction takes place is telling.
