I have recently enjoyed watching many older Japanese cartoons with English language subtitles at the website for Japanese Animated Film Classics. However, "Manga: Tonpei to Sarakichi" is one I not only did not enjoy but it made me a bit mad. After all, this was a cartoon intended to be seen by children...and is filled with violence and justifications for Japan's recent invasion of China. When the story begins, the lazy and evil pig, Tonpei, awakens late and is hungry. So he sneaks over to the home of the Monkey, Sarukichi, to steal some food. The next day, this bold pig shows up again at Sarukichi's home and he attacks Sarukichi's children. One phones Sarukichi for help and soon he arrives home and drives away the wicked pig. Next, the pig goes to King Lion and lies...saying Sarukichi attacked him for no reason. Soon the lion's army arrives to punish the guiltless Sarukichi and it looks like he and his children are doomed. But in the end, the nice mole blows up the lion and his army....the end.The Sarukichi and his children is meant to represent Japan. And, in the cartoon Japan is the innocent victim of foreigners....so it has no choice to fight back against injustice. At the same time, Japan's invasion of Manchuria in northern China was completely unjustified...they simply wanted the land and were quick to murder civilians to get it. If you don't know history, you might not realize what the film is implying and why...but it is a very ugly and violent film....filled with lies and marketed towards innocent children.
