Burglars of 'Baghdad' Castle (1926)
15 Jul 1926 • Animation, Short • 0h 38m
The original version of "Bagudajo no tozoku" ("Burglars of 'Baghdad' Castle") lasted more than 30 minutes and was three reels in length. Unfortunately, like most old films, time has not been good to the movie and only 14 minutes remain today. Considering how many silent films have disappeared completely (due to the volatility of old nitrate film stock), at least we have the 14 minutes! The animation in this film looks much like that you see on "South Park"--cut outs that are animated in the same way the show was originally made. It's good quality but not a style that is great. It's set in the land of 'Ba-gh-da' according to the English subtitles...not Baghdad. In the story, Dangobei is a lazy thief who has just found a good luck charm. Realizing it might help him win the heart of the princess, he goes on a quest. First, he manages to kill the wicked centaur who has been harassing the Snow Fairy. Then, using the magic snow, he takes on a nasty dragon...and once again is successful. Will he manage to win her heart after all this or will his next trial kill him? This is good to see once. While not a great film, it is creative and took a lot of work. Worth seeing and available to view with captions on the website for Japanese Animated Film Classics.
