Chicken Dressing (1923)
28 Jan 1923 • Animation, Comedy, Short
While young Earl Hurd Jr. is writing the scenario for the latest Bobby Bumps cartoon, the chicken is busy laying eggs. When he finally gets around to directing the cartoon, however, Bobby Bumps balks at the cartoon smoke, which looks more like springs to him. It's a fascinating little mixed live-action-and-animation short, with animal players like Hall Roach's abortive Dippy Doo Dads series. More than that, it shows a sensibility that is not what we expect of cartoons nowadays, with their elaborate Cartoon Physics and mutability of objects. there's mockery of Earl Hurd, who doesn't seem to do anything in regards to making this cartoon, except for putting his name on it.... and drawing a nice salary, I imagine. A very nice example of Hurd's long-running series.
