The Ten Commandments Number 5: Thou Shalt Not Kill (1995) *** (out of 4) The fifth film in Phil Mulloy's series is finally one that I enjoyed. We're introduced to a farmer from Arkansas who has one death in his family after another so he decides to kill himself. After his suicide his spirit heads off to Heaven where he gets to ask God a question. This fifth film runs around four minutes shorter than the previous four films and I think it benefits from this. Whereas the previous ones had a lot of build-up that went to a final punchline, this one here features just one long running gag that keeps working. The way the deaths are shown were quite funny and I really liked the animation on them. The animation is pretty simple and it doesn't try to blow your mind but it fits the material and actually makes it work. Once we get to Heaven is when that punchline happens and I must say it works. I'm not going to spoil what happens but it's a rather clever joke that I'm sure will offend many but one shouldn't be too sensitive when it comes time to view Mulloy's work.
