In a desert-like landscape we see a very long queue of people which are queuing up to the entrance of an huge, dark, fortress-like building. Here we meet our protagonist. He then enters the office of the headhunter who offers him a job as "pressure-bolt-specialist" - the german word for pressure-bolt is Druckbolzen - in this company and says, that discipline at work is of highest importance. After a cut our protagonist is standing in an endless passage with cubicles on both sides. In the cubicles there are desks with men at some repetitive work. He tries to greet one of his new colleagues (who is referred as the "Quitter" in the credits) but that man just looks at him shortly and then frantically continues working. He is obviously stressed. A desk and chair is moved out of an alcove in the wall. This is the workplace of the protagonist.. He sits down and a sheet of paper is coming out of a slot on the left side of his desk. On this sheet there's a small technical drawing and some text. The work consists of drawing a line with a pencil, punching some small piston on it and inserting the sheet into a slot on the right side of the desk. While he is processing the 1st sheets we hear a warning buzzer from somewhere. He turns around and the sound is coming from the desk of his colleague he tried to greet. There's also a lamp flashing by his desk. The camera goes upward and we see that there are huge bolt-like devices looming above every workplace. The device over the Quitter's desk if lowered a little. The desk then starts being recessed into the wall. The Quitter tries to hold it back but doesn't make it and in the end some hatch is slamming shut chopping off his hands. Next he looks fearfully upwards (as our protagonist does) and the Quitter is just squashed by the huge bolt. The remains are automatically dumped into a pit below the workplace and a new desk is coming out of the wall. While our protagonist is watching this dismayed more sheets are coming out of his slot. Suddenly his own buzzer and flashing lamp is activated. He frantically continues working as fast as he can and finally buzzer and lamp are going silent again. While he's continuing working the camera slowly moves away and over all the workplaces and the huge bolts above. We see successively several of these technical drawings which are optically copied from the sheets and are successively assembled to a bolt like the one that squashed the Quitter. The drawing then seems to materialize to a real device and we see our protagonist being squashed by it ending him and the film.
