In the third of the Magistrate Toyama series, the ship bearing gold from an island mine sinks in what appears to be a whirlwind. The shogunate in Edo is seriously angry; the investigating magistrates from the South District have been disappearing. so they send Chiezô Kataoka to investigate undercover. Only the official in charge of the mine, a lifetime buddy of Kataoka, knows who he is. He wanders around, gets into a fight with a man at a bar, courts one of the bar tenders, and hears about a man who found a gold coin and how the mine is filled with poisonous gas. Plus he gets into a couple of fights and bare-handed, defeats armed guards. It's a good-looking movie, but it's one of those mysteries in which the detective pulls everyone in at the last moment and announces who's guilty and why, producing new details of evidence only at the summary.the director of this movie is Masahiro Makino. The son of pioneering Japanese director Shôzô Makino. He was born in 1908, the same year his father directed his first movie. Masahiro's first directorial job was in 1926. By the time he retired in 1972, he had directed more than 170 features. He had one last credit, as "supervising director" in 1990, and died three years later. Surely that's some record for a father-son directing pair: more than two hundred short subjects, almost three hundred feature, over 85 years.
