This film follows the life of a woman through the tumultuous years of Korea's modern history. At the age of 13, Tong-Jin first meets Myong-Ja, who is 6. This relationship lasts through many years of struggle. Tong-Jin has left Korea to study in Japan when he learns that Myong-Ja is in love with another man, Yu Min-Ho. In 1943 Tong-Jin joins the fight against Japanese colonialism. He is sent on a mission to Sakhalin where he again meets Myong-Ja, who is working as a 'cafe hostess.' She had been sold by her lover Yu into this degrading life style. After leading a revolt at a coal mine Tong-Jin escapes with the aid of Myong-Ja. Years later they meet again and remember their past life.
