Vadivelu (Kamal Haasan) is a butcher with a tough exterior but heart of gold. His sister Rani (Raghavi) is in love with Ramesh (Ramesh Aravind) and son of rich man Paramasivam (V. K. Ramasamy) and wife Vadivu (Vadivukarasi). Selvi (Bhanupriya), another slum dweller, is in love with Vadivelu. Selvi takes upon herself the job of uniting Rani and Ramesh. Vadivu meets with an accident and goes into a coma but not before revealing that of the sons Ramesh and Sekar (Chandrasekar) one is not their own. Paramasivam and his driver govindan (Goundamani) try to find out which son is theirs. Meanwhile, Ramesh marries Rani and brings the girl home but Paramasivam refuses to accept them. Sekar too reveals that he is married and even has a child. Both the sons ask for a share of the family wealth but Paramasivam refuses to give in and tells them to wait till Vadivu regains consciousness and reveals the truth. Now start the efforts of his two sons and their wives to win over Paramasivam.
