What can I say. Since the mid-90's the Irish film industry has spawned a wide amount of similar crime films. It was my delight to stumble upon this rare beauty one Monday night. We finally have a film that does not have gangsters, murderers, rapists etc. Instead we have a young man (Monster) who is desperate to escape his native city of Dublin and travel to see the delights of the outside world. We open with a beautifully shot credit sequence which does the D.O.P proud. Monster sets out on his adventure where says goodbye to his friends and his grandfather only to get mugged on the way to the ferry. What follows is a funniest adventure over the course of three months. Monster tells his story and his encounters with a variety of oddballs through what he calls " Monsters Log ".It is easy to point out what I like about this film. Firstly it is the excellent quality of the technical side that the crew captured. Secondly it's the characters and their story lines which had me aching in pain from start to finish and lastly the character " Monster " seems to be in all my friends I know these days in Ireland. We all want to get the hell out of the country too.Writer/Producer/Director Lance Daly has a very good show on his hands that proves to be excellent debut in the film world & I will be looking out for his next effort " Hallo Effect ".
