When her mother died, Rosa was almost seven years old. She had to start working so that she and her grandmother could pay for food and the little brothers' schooling. When she was washing dishes and cleaning a restaurant one day, three local police officers caught sight of Rosa. One night they followed her and kidnapped her. They tied her up, beat her and raped her. That same night, she was taken to a room at Hotel Solédad where the police raped her for a month to get her used to it, as Rosa says. A cruel preparation for a life as a prostitute. Rosa was a good deal for the police, young, untried and attractive, trapped in La Merced, Mexico City's brothel.
