Tenderloin at Night (1899)
01 Nov 1899 • Short • 0h 2m
In 1899, films were very, very brief--usually about one to two minutes long at most. So, when a director tried to make a more complex and squeeze it into this time format, problems are no doubt going to occur--especially since they hadn't come up with the notion of intertitle cards to explain the action. This film is set inside some house of ill-repute. A Mexican-looking guy is drinking and as soon as he passes out, one of the ladies of easy virtue relieves him of his cash. He leaves and soon comes back with the police. In between, there is a lot of confusing action--and the ladies begin dancing for no discernible reason. In fact, the entire film is confusing. As another reviewer pointed out, it's meant to be exploitational but it doesn't do it effectively.
