At the Ringside (1921)
17 Jul 1921 • Comedy, Short
During the 1910s, Harry 'Snub' Pollard appeared in tons of shorts with Harold Lloyd. However, when Lloyd left Hal Roach Studios in order to produce his own films, this left Pollard without his usual work as a sidekick. So, during the 1920s, Roach tried starring Pollard in his own films...some of which hold up amazingly well today."At the Ringside" is one of Pollard's solo efforts. In it, he plays a cop whose beat is a VERY rough neighborhood where practically everyone spends their time beating each other up and drinking (it was during Prohibition, so it was illegal). There are a lot of gags and not much in the way of plot in the first half of the film. However, when a huge and mean landlord threatens to toss a young lady out of her lunch counter, Snub decides to earn the money needed by boxing the big guy! Apparently, he's so tough that anyone who can beat him gets $100. Does tiny Snub stand a chance?I think this Charley Chase directed short works because the gags work well and the story has a decent number of laughs. Well worth seeing.
