As weary but victorious Greece is attempting to find its feet after the Revolution against the tyrannical Ottoman Empire, in 1827 Nafplio--the capital of the newly established state--the happy innkeeper, Bastias, has got too much on his plate already. More and more, his well-kept inn becomes a cultural and linguistic melting pot, where diverse characters from every corner of Greece find themselves sharing the same roof. Before long, a brawl breaks out for the eyes of Bastias' beautiful daughter, Garoufalia, and a superficial wound sends the hot-blooded rivals behind bars. Now, the Ionian police commander, Georgios Fantes, has to shed light on the cause of the fight even though he doesn't understand a word they're saying. Will he get to the bottom of this thorny case?
