This is Norman McLaren's first film and I saw it recently on disk 1 of the 7 DVD set of his work. And, since it's his first film, it's very, very rough...and you know that McLaren's later work gets better and more polished."7 Til 5" demonstrates that McLaren was new to films and it appears as if he was just having fun making a home movie--so you can't blame him too much for the lameness of this short. It is black & white and has lots of cheap visuals--such as a handmade clock face. The film itself consists of various images of people going to work and working. None of it's the least bit interesting except to McLaren groupies--and it looks like he was saying 'wow--look at me---I gots me a camera!!". Well, we all need to start somewhere! I won't bother giving this one a vote--it's really not fair and I doubt he ever intended this to be shown on a DVD!!
