The lives of African-American siblings George and Mary are altered when she gets sick with tuberculosis. Mary disregards any advice about home remedies and goes to a doctor, and both she and George find out that organized religion is an important defensive location in their particular community, that warns of the dangers of the previous generation's superstitions and fear of medicine.
