In the huge catalog of Feuillade's shorts ,there are several films inspired by Greek mythology.This one,like the judgment of Pâris,is a contest:who will weave the finest web,goddess Athena or Arachne ? The latter wins,and Athena is cross;she throws her rival into hell;hell is depicted as always,between our feet,with painted back-cloth.After,Arachne is sent to the kingdom of Poseidon,beneath the sea ,where strange fishes are swimming;not exactly "Le Grand Bleu" ,but not bad for 1908.Athena is not being able to stand her rival anymore,and the young girl becomes... a spider on his web,a very nice ending ,lovely filmed.Alice Tissot became a famous stage actress ;she also made a lot of movies (notably "Ignace" ,a coarse comedy in which she played opposite Fernandel),most of them more commercial than artistic.
