After his wife is murdered in the middle of the street by a maniac with a gun, Alexis empties his bank account, leaves his job and his friends to go on an adventure. As the days go by, he becomes interested in and witnesses the spectacle of the street. Here, peasants block the roads, further on, he is told, angry shopkeepers, while on television, the conspirators of a province in revolt are shot live. His meeting with Daphne will upset his program. He moves in with her. Under tranquilizers to support her life, Daphne goes from laughter to tears with disconcerting ease. Alexis' intrusion will determine her behavior; like him, she decides to "take the trip" which can only end in death. Abandoning everything, they leave together, never to return. Weapons appear everywhere, repression is going on. Hostage-taking, pollution, shootings, hangings, everything points to an imminent catastrophe. At the end of their journey, they have exhausted their last resources, Daphne gives up, she does not want to die anymore. Persuaded, Alexis gives up in his turn. They return to his home, but the apartment is now occupied by a large family, and each lives in terror of the others. No matter, they choose to continue, the nightmare is everywhere. They will make do with.
