Caihosei rojin no sekai (1998)
Documentary • 1h 24m
Hanada brings a camera into a public hospital for the senile in this documentary which warmly observes the patients, their families and a medical system which believes in "consent, rather than persuasion." A 78-years-old patient believes she is still a young woman; one refuses to eat; and another carries her belongings around as she makes her rounds of the hospital in a film which is remarkable for its full and sympathetic portrait of the patients. Awarded best documentary film in Japan in 1986.
