Edith, a poor serving girl, faints at her machine one morning and the kind-hearted superintendent, who is in love with her, asks his friend physician to diagnose the case. The doctor, after making an examination, finds that her trouble is not serious. He is also smitten by her charms and when he calls the next day and finding that she is better, invites her for a short ride in his automobile. The superintendent, who has called at the girl's house just in time to witness the departure, angrily awaits their return. When Edith goes to her room the superintendent proposes marriage. She says that she cannot do more than respect him and in a heated argument outside of her room, he falls down the stairs. The fall necessitates an immediate operation and he is rushed to the hospital at which his friend is the operating doctor, and who refuses to perform his duty. Through the persuasion of Edith the surgeon is induced to commence the operation. As it is in progress a fire breaks out in the hospital and all the nurses flee from the place. The assistant doctor also tries to escape, but the surgeon by locking the door and throwing the key out of the window prevents it. After the operation the firemen carry the patient out of the window to safety. A few days afterwards the surgeon calling to see how the convalescent man is getting on, finds Edith attending to him. She is treated coldly by the surgeon and leaves. Upon being told by the superintendent that Edith will not marry him, the surgeon goes immediately to her home and after explanations, she agrees to an engagement.
