07 Sep 1911 • Romance, Short
Rosie Carter, while visiting at the home of Captain Brant, captivates Walter Allen and Jasper Lorne. She encourages both men in her flirtatious way, and causes jealousy between the two friends. One day as they are preparing to leave on a long fishing trip. Rosie gives to each admirer a rose, telling that to the one still possessing her rose on his return, she will give a kiss. Allen hides his rose. Lorne witnesses the act and steals Allen's rose and throws it overboard. He then takes his rose and is looking at it when Allen, seeing him, goes to the hiding-place and discovers his loss. He accuses Lorne of the theft. The two rivals are struggling when Captain Brant separates them, and orders them to take a net and go out into a dory, which they launch. The struggle starts anew and the boat upsets. Both men are thrown into the sea. Lorne catches hold of a log and clings to it while Allen, breasting the waves, finally reaches shore. He meets Rosie and tells her that Lorne has been drowned. Rosie, grief-stricken, runs out upon the rocks scanning the water for signs of Lorne. Allen follows, pleading with her that it was not his fault, but she answers him with a look of scornful anger and runs away. Captain Brant and his crew had lighted Lorne clinging to the log. They throw a line aid he is pulled ashore. He tells them that Allen has been drowned, and when the boat reaches shore, they carry the news of Allen's supposed death to Mrs. Brant. Lorne, remorseful, goes out upon the rocks and grieves. Allen comes over the rocks and sees Lorne. Each takes the other for a ghost and run away in terror, but they finally conquer their fear and come back and embrace each other. They walk down the shore and are met by the fisher folk, who rejoice at their safe return. Rosie is sitting on the rocks heart-broken, Lorne and Allen appear. Allen approaches Rosie, offering her a rose. She throws it away, saying that she loves Lorne, who is dead. Allen then retreats and pushes Lorne towards Rosie. He takes her in his arms, while Allen steals out upon the rocks and sits looking sorrowfully at the rose in his hand.
