The Senator's Double (1910)
18 Aug 1910 • Short, Drama
Senator Dickenson is addicted to the morphine habit. He is preparing a speech to be presented in the Senate. He meets a man from his own state who is his exact double, and they both are struck at the resemblance to each other. Before he is ready to make the speech in the Senate, the morphine disables him, and he begs his friend to take his place, on the pretext that he is ill and cannot undergo the strain incidental to delivering the address. After much persuasion, the friend consents, and proceeds on his way to the Senate. When the time comes for the speech to be delivered, the bogus senator arises, goes through to the end, and makes his way from the Senate chamber. Of course, the entire body understands that Senator Dickenson had made the speech, and has not the faintest idea that he is at home writhing under the influence of the deadly narcotic. The friend returns to the Senator's home and finds him dead. He sympathizes with the grief-stricken sister of the senator, and in the course of consoling her, falls ardently in love with her. The last chapter is far away from the chamber of death, grief and pain have vanished, and their hearts are filled with the tender love that only the dart of Cupid can instill.
