When Ira Smiley saw that he was in danger of losing his sweetheart, Marjorie Thorne, because he was not quite as well tailored as her city friends, he did not give up. He exchanged his plow shoes for patent leathers, his felt bat for a silk one, and then he called on Marjorie. She went driving with him, and when they were fording the river, Ira calmly got out and unhitched the horse, declaring that he would leave her there unless she promised to marry him. Marjorie consented then. But after he carried her ashore and back home, she again rebelled and declared she would never marry him. Ira started to carry her back to the marooned buggy. Then Marjorie capitulated.
