When, after years of hard labor, a medical student is finally awarded his degree and diploma, it becomes his sworn duty to save a patient no matter what malice or enmity he may harbor. Medical practice in this way is saved the indignity of being turned into a tool for the vengeful or villainous designs of men. Out story deals with a violation of this solemn oath. A girl already received the coveted ring from her sweetheart and is enjoying that sublime period of life when one expects to enter into matrimony. But hasty action has been known to spoil many good things, and in this case it follows when she happens by the railroad depot and sees her fiancé kissing another girl. She does not know that he is greeting his visiting sister, nor does she wait to find out, but with that foolishly romantic turn of mind inherent in some people, goes off and becomes a nurse in a hospital. For a long time the young man searches for her, but without avail. A long time elapses, she is now a full-fledged nurse, but an interne, a young surgeon, is making life miserable for her with his attentions. We see one of the incidents, where he tries to embrace her but she avoids him. On this particular day a new patient has been brought in, a victim of reckless auto driving, and she goes into the ward to administer to him. She lifts the patient's head, when suddenly she starts back; it is her fiancé. As his condition is not precarious one can easily imagine that explanations are eventually forthcoming, and the nurse realizes her haste and folly, and the old love surfaces into renewed flame. The surgeon is not slow to see this condition of affairs, though he does not know the attending circumstances. His jealousy becomes his overwhelming passion and the fiend in him asserts itself. Unseen, he drops some liquid from a vial into the patient's medicine as the latter sleeps and soon the nurse comes in to administer it. But a boy invalid on the next cot has seen the doctor's act, and crawling from his bed, he stays her arm and tells her what he saw. In another moment she has gone to the head superintendent of the hospital, who promptly analyzes the ingredient in the medicine as poison. The perfidious doctor is summoned to the office, and by the testimony of the boy and the vial in his pocket is given into the hands of the police. The nurse goes back to her patient, and she certainly takes no chances on her sweetheart's medicine thereafter.
