Till 1937,Christian -Jacques 's movies are a dime a dozen ;most of these movies are eminently forgettable : one cannot rank " compartiment de dames seules""la famille Pont-Biquet" "Josette" ,"les dégourdis de la onzième" (!) "A Venise une nuit " or "les pirates du rail" among the lost treasures of the French cinema .It was the late thirties before he became a truly great director. His first effort , "le bidon d'or" (the golden can) , suffers from a weak desultory script ; two many subplots ,incoherent , its only interest ,as the precedent user pointed out ,is its documentary side : a car race with old jalopies is pleasant to watch : note that number 13 is at the start ;since 1925, this number has been suspected of bringing bad luck to the competitors and rarely used by them (there's a Michel Vaillant comic strip called " Le 13 est au départ" which begins with a gripping nightmarish scene).A desultory script,to put it mildly : two garage owners, vying for their clientele , and whose lethal feud thwarts their daughter's and son's romance, a street pedlar who winds up in one of the places , an American who wants to have her car fixed (perhaps the most endearing character ) ,a Belgian champion who receives an avalanche of mail (he's a star).A mess.
