Maître Augias, a rich farmer in Camargue, throws Martégas away from his home and the man vows to get revenge. Augias' daughter, Zanette secretly loves Pastorel, nicknamed "King of Camargue". The latter is initially more interested in Rosseline but discovers how unworthy she is and at the ferrade of Saint-Eloi, a village fest, he bravely conquers a cockade to give it to Zanette. Rosseline gets jealous and Martégas uses her for his revenge with several attempts to kill Pastorel. In the Arles arena, he tries to stab him but the bull kills him. Even though Zanette and Pastorel can now plan their wedding, Rosseline plans on ruining it.
