After been told so often by his father that he will never amount to anything, Joel Parker has no confidence in himself. When he goes to college, he becomes the butt of many jokes, but he has one friend, Abbie Nettleton, a girl who runs a confectionery store. Because he is such a blunderer, Joel is allowed to wear a baseball uniform and sit on the team bench, just for luck. The big game attracts Joel's father, who comes to see his son play ball.
