Josser in the Army (1932)
20 Feb 1933 • Comedy • 1h 22m
Ernie Lotinga was a music hall comedian who played a character called Jimmy Josser in a series of films in the 1930s.He is totally forgotten today but clearly had something of following. The comedy is fairly broad and therefore is rooted in its era and is difficult to appreciate today. The film starts with a wedding of an officer who is a German spy.War is then declared and Josser and his pals enlist and find themselves in Flanders. There a lot of farcical, though unfunny, situations arise. The scenario incidentally is written by Frank Launder who would go on to far better films than this.It is directed without subtlety by Norman Lee who directed many quota quickie. This film is really only as a historical record of a music hall comedian.
