From North Vietnam comes an image of the war too rarely considered from our end of the conflict, as seen through the innocent eyes of a teenage girl in Hanoi who develops a romantic attachment, through letters and daydreams, with a young soldier she'll never meet. Her story is honest and heartfelt, but the film needs more than a little help from its audience. Some patience and concentration is required to sort through the often illegible and awkwardly translated English subtitles ("What funny your question is!"), and the negligible Third World production budget can sometimes make it resemble an unfinished amateur film. But beyond its strictly technical shortcomings is a delicate, melancholy drama, sensitive to the pain and uncertainty of women at home during wartime, something easily translated across any culture. In the end it succeeds in putting a human face on people once regarded as the enemy.
