This is a delightful piece by collage artist Pat O'Neill. It was such a crowd pleaser when it was screened here in 1998, the programmers re-scheduled it later that spring. Like other O'Neill films (SIDEWINDER'S DELTA; LET'S MAKE A SANDWICH) this is an engaging smorgasbord of sound and image, which are purposely intercut so as NOT to make any narrative sense (for example, dialogue and music from a cheesy 1950's Grade 5 science class movie is married with a completely inappropriate visual). Plus, the film is further layered with some computerized doodling over the images. TROUBLE IN THE IMAGE also intercuts time-lapse footage of a huge movie set being deconstructed after filming has ended. (O'Neill's day job is an FX co-ordinator) Thus, in this film, the method is to continuously question what we see on a movie screen, and to ponder what we perceive to be reality. However, Pat O'Neill's intent is not to deconstruct cinema theory, nor to frustrate the viewer. Rather, his films are playful collections of onscreen oxymorons.
