Pas de pitié pour les caves (1955)

Although it takes place in the underworld ,this is far from being an action-packed movie:no robbery,no stickup,no car chase and the cops are almost absent;hardly they hint at drug trafficking and procuring. That the two buddies are living off immoral earnings does not keep one of the hookers (Dora Doll)from dreaming of the little house on the seaside where she becomes an housekeeper and her pimp is fishing all day long:after all, everyone deserves a retirement! If the viewer had to take this laughable story seriously ,it would rather be a psychological drama than a thriller;one of the pimps meets a pure young chanteuse in a shady nightclub where there're very bad things such as strip tease (two numbers). This innocent young thing (with a little girl's voice)does not seem to know the world she lives in;an orphan, she had to earn her crust very early and fortunately she had studied music;for the gangster,it might be his second chance, the only way to redeem himself .But one of his colleagues and his moll are not prepared to accept it.The plot is so thin the director had to add filler consisting of many night club numbers. No star, the actors are all minor figures and only Jean Tissier stands out as a bartender where the hoodlums meet.Sometimes the movie looks like a pale imitation of the classics of the thirties (particularly Carné's "Hotel Du Nord")but the genius is nowhere to be found.
