This is another of the typically fine Fleischer Screen Songs cartoons. A couple of cartoon sequences about young children heading off to school and getting into a fight in class bracket Gus Kahn doing his act in which he plays a teacher taking attendance and then having a young girl sing.Who was Gus Kahn? He was an entertainer who had written the song "School Days" with Will Cobb. He also claimed to have discovered the Marx Brothers, Eddie Cantor and probably that last piece of pie in the refrigerator, so he had dibs. In actuality his was an act in which he presented amateurs who showed off their talents. It must have been very popular on the Vaudeville circuit; Mr. Kahn would put the kiddies on the stage and their parents would buy tickets and applaud wildly.Anyway, I'm more interested in the cartoon segments of this Screen Song, which has an Our Gang feel to it. One Black kid has a fair amount of screen time and some of the students have dog ears. As usual, the gags are paced very rapidly and it will certainly keep up your interest.
