Getting Ahead (1965)
Approved 01 Dec 1965 • Animation, Short • 0h 6m
This is a terrible short film that was included as an extra in the first volume of the compilation "American Slapstick", though I really think it could have been omitted. Some supposedly clever person thought that using tons of old silent comedy clips as a basis for a movie was sure gold--so much so that arranging them in a coherent manner or making sure the film was entertaining weren't even considered. The film consists of many maxims appearing on the screen and after each there is an almost completely irrelevant clip to supposedly illustrate the point. Again and again, these messages appear--followed by the clips. The first one begins with a pointless clip involving then governor Rockefeller--the only sound or color clip. You know it's going to be bad when they see Rockefeller as "comedy gold".The overall effort is just pathetic and despite clips of Chaplin, Lloyd and others, it's an incoherent mess of a short. Avoid this and try to see the original films instead.
